SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) delaying a vote on the zero-emission appliance rule and sending it back to the Stationary Source Committee.”

Statement from Melissa Romero, Policy Advocacy Director, California Environmental Voters:

“Delaying a vote on the zero-emission appliance rule is a serious setback for clean air and climate action in Southern California. Instead of moving forward with a common-sense rule that would begin phasing out polluting gas appliances in homes and buildings, the measure has been sent back with no clear commitment that it will come back this year. And yet, the communities represented by this District continue to suffer from some of the worst air quality in the country.

SCAQMD has a responsibility to protect the health of our communities, and that means moving forward on bold solutions, not stalling them in committee. We urge the District to act quickly to bring the rule back this year and ensure the transition to zero-emission appliances is equitable and affordable.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA ENVIRONMENTAL VOTERS

California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
