2020 is a new year and the beginning of a new decade. 2020 will be the year of accountability, and we’re starting the year strong by releasing our new and improved 2019 California Environmental Scorecard today!
CLCV’s Scorecard is a tool for voters to better understand how their representatives in the state legislature vote and prioritize the environment.
According to a poll conducted by UC Berkeley, 85% of likely voters in California’s Democratic primary said climate change was a top priority. Furthermore, 47% said climate change should be the leading priority of the next president – higher than any other issue. Californians care about the environment, and they should know who among their representatives will act in their best interest.
As the urgency to address both our climate and political crises heightens, we’ve revamped the Scorecard to reflect our current reality and to be a powerful instrument for change. Several of our new additions include:
- A California score – one that displays the need for more action from our lawmakers if we are serious about meeting the 2030 climate deadlines.
- A Climate Action Caucus highlighting leaders, who are bringing forth bold policy solutions to tackle our climate crisis.
- The Polluter Caucus, which displays a list of five legislators who have stalled or halted our progress to protect the environment.
- A score for the state senate’s overall performance.
- A score for the state assembly overall performance.
Our lawmakers must step up their leadership across the board.
Scientists say we have 10 years to prevent climate catastrophe. The Trump administration has declared war on our environmental protections, and California’s leadership is critical in this fight.
That’s why our California Environmental Scorecard is so important.
We are looking to go beyond broad pats on the back and instead lifting up champions who are driving our climate agenda as well as holding ones who aren’t accountable.
It’s up to us to hold our legislators accountable. We hope you will use our Scorecard to determine who is fighting to protect our environment and build a clean energy future for everyone.
